At TheSweetBits, we always try to find some of the most novel, productive and promising apps for Mac and Windows. In the past couple of years, we have found and reviewed so many of such apps as well. So, when we came across Dropzone 4, we badly wanted to test it out and tell you about it.
We think Dropzone 4 is one of the most productive macOS apps we’ve tested in the past year. In this article, we have a brief review of DropZone 4 and how it can make your Mac experience better, by enriching the in-built menu bar of macOS.
What Is Dropzone 4?
Dropzone is a productive app that is made for macOS devices. However, instead of creating a window of its own, it becomes a part of your macOS menu bar. As the name says, Dropzone creates a zone where you can drop digital things, like files, folders and more.
While this is the basic idea, additional features make Dropzone 4 a wonderful addition to every Mac there. This free app is available via App Store and Setapp.
Why Use Dropzone?
As we said, Dropzone can convert your Mac’s menu bar into a truly productive space. Now, this is important, because the menu bar is probably the least utilized space on any Mac device.
There are a few tasks that we do repeatedly, right? Copying files to a particular folder, shortening URLs and opening apps are some of them. Won’t that be great if you can do all these from a single digital space?
Well, that is what Dropzone does to your Mac. It creates a space that you can use to launch apps, move or copy files, shorten URLs and even download YouTube videos directly. So, if you like to automate some of those routine tasks and increase your productivity, you have a big reason to use Dropzone 4.
Dropzone 4 Review: What’s Inside It?
Now, let’s have a look at a few features inside the Dropzone 4 package. We will explore different parts on the interface and see what you can do.
Folders/Apps
You can use this grid of Dropzone to keep Folders and Apps for easy access. In my case, I have placed the Word app and the Downloads folder on this grid. So, if I want to open Word or the Downloads folder, I can do that in just a single click.
But, more importantly, you can drag and drop files onto the folder icon. Depending on the choice you have made, Dropzone will copy/move the file/folder into Downloads. Dropzone can even send you a notification once it has made a file transfer.
Drop Bar
Drop Bar is a temporary file storage space that Dropzone gives you. You can use this virtual space to keep an important file or folder for later access. Just as we did before, you can drag the file and drop it onto the Drop Bar icon.
The file/folder will stay there until you take it away. So, you don’t have to create random folders for storing temporary files. Pretty awesome, right?
Actions
Actions are probably the best feature in the Dropzone 4 package. You can set up Dropzone to do actions as you drag and drop files/folders/URLs over the corresponding icons. Here’s an example.
You can drag and drop an image to the img.ur icon and Dropzone will automatically upload the image to the image-hosting service. Even better, Dropzone 4 will copy the URL of the img.ur page to your clipboard. This way, you can save a lot of time. When you want to quickly share an image with someone online, this process is the easiest.
Similarly, you can perform actions like:
- Shorten URL by dragging the main link to the corresponding icon. Dropzone uses tinyurl.com to do this job.
- Send files via AirDrop by simply dropping the files/folders on the AirDrop icon.
- Upload files to Google Drive or Amazon S3 Cloud in a single click.
- Send some text as a message to someone in your contacts
- Email files using a webmail service
These are the built-in actions in the Dropzone 4 package. The best part is that you can download and install a lot of other actions if you want. Some of the actions you can download are:
- Set dropped image as a screensaver
- Install an application from the dropped DMG file
- Download the YouTube video from the dropped YouTube URL
- Perform Google Image Search using the dropped image
- Compress dropped files and create a ZIP document
- Upload dropped video to YouTube.
Dropzone even allows you to create your own actions. You should have some basic coding knowledge to do that, though. We’d recommend downloading actions from the official website Dropzone if you are not into coding.
Customization Options
Didn’t we say that you can arrange the different icons on the Dropzone interface as you like?
Customization is indeed a strong forte of the Dropzone app. There are options to control how each action in the system works. For instance, we can take the case of the YouTube Downloader action. You can right-click on the icon and choose Edit to customize the action.
In the next window, you can do a few things. First and foremost, you can decide where Dropzone saves the downloaded YouTube videos. Second, you can check for action updates. By the way, you can also edit the script of the action if you want.
Similarly, you can control the different actions to suit your convenience.

Preferences
Dropzone comes with a minimal yet useful Preferences pane as well. You can use this section to control how Dropzone looks. You can increase and decrease the size of the grid, for one. Even better, you can turn on/off options like notifications and sound.
You can also enable a shortcut to toggle the grid. In the Cloud Actions tab, you also get to control the web-based actions you have added to the grid. You can not only check for their updates but also add or remove actions from Dropzone.
My Take on Dropzone
As someone who uses the Mac for so many purposes, I find Dropzone to be a truly productive app. Within a week of using, the app has saved hours of my time. Now, instead of going to Google Drive and uploading a file, I can just drag-and-drop the file onto an icon.
Similarly, the YouTube Downloader and Compression features help me to keep only a few apps running. On most days, I don’t need a powerful YouTube downloader app for Mac either. I also loved how Dropzone lets us set up uploading options for FTP, SFTP and Cloud-based services like Amazon S3.
I’m sure many professionals will find these features useful.
What Could Be Better
What I’m about to say isn’t a deal-breaker at all. In fact, I don’t have any reason why you should not install Dropzone on your Mac.
Show Menu Bar On Mac
Still, being the reviewers that we are at TheSweetBits, we think Dropzone could have improved the options to create new actions. It can add a feature that allows users to create their own actions by drag-and-dropping triggers/actions.
That would have made Dropzone simply perfect.

As we said, Dropzone 4 is available for macOS only.
Dropzone 4 is completely free to use. However, you cannot enjoy additional actions like Google Drive upload or YouTube download. Still, you can use Dropzone to manage files within your Mac system.
If you want those premium features, you have to purchase Dropzone Pro, which costs $1.99 each month. If we compare the features, though, the pricing is quite reasonable.
